Who would have thought that the amazing soy product could be anything but good for your health. Overdoing it however, seems to be a big problem when it comes to male fertility. A recent study published in the Human Reproduction Journal (2008) indicated that men consuming soy may have a lower sperm count! The study concluded that the men with highest intake of soy had the lowest sperm count. Apparently soy contains phytoestrogen which is a plant soy that can have adverse affects on the sperm count. The worrisome part is that many foods contain it including pizzas. How to ensure that you don’t overdo it? Eat a healthy balanced meal three or more times a day – and go with fresh produce rather than pre-cooked or packaged foods.

In many cases smoking and fertility problems go hand in hand. Smoking and fertility problems have been connected in a number of ways. Smoking for instance, can affect the binding capacity of the male sperm tremendously. It also improves the chances of blood clotting and has been linked to lower oxygen levels in the blood. Long term smoking can cause changes in the reproductive system and since the harmful substances can also affect the DNA of the sperm the defects can be passed onto the child. If you are trying to conceive it is important that not only the female stops smoking, but also the male. Both partners will have an influence on successful conception and the health of the baby.
